What expenses are included in the profit and loss but added back to?

Non-cash expense items such as depreciation, amortization and share-based compensation are examples of items that are included in net income and added back into the statement of cash flows. The fact that these are expenses that didn't require any cash during the period should be a clue as to the reason why.
